Dar Es Salaam (6 May 2010) - Helen Clark, Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), arrives in Tanzania on 8 May on a four-day official visit, during which she will meet President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume to discuss UNDP’s support to the United Republic of Tanzania, particularly in the areas of governance and climate change.
She will also focus on the country’s progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ― a set of eight goals designed to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and maternal and child deaths by 2015, agreed upon by world leaders in 2000.
Miss Clark will also be meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Bernard Kamillius Membe and the Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Mustafa Mkulo, as well as other government officials and development partners.
The discussions will revolve around development- and poverty reduction-related challenges and UN Reform, which has initiated closer cooperation between UN agencies in Tanzania, known as Delivering as One.
On Zanzibar, Helen Clark will visit the House of Wonders Museum and the Jozani-Chwaka Bay Conservation area, both of which have received support from UNDP.
In Dar Es Salaam, the UNDP Administrator has a meeting with the National Electoral Commission to discuss voter participation and electoral management in the upcoming General Elections.
Miss Clark’s Tanzanian visit rounds off with a public discussion on climate change and its impact on achieving the MDGs.

To lay out clear steps for countries to achieve the Goals by 2015, the UN Secretary-General will convene a special high level summit on the MDGs in New York in September 2010.
Helen Clark arrives in Tanzania after visiting Mali and Burkina Faso and will travel from
Tanzania on to South Africa.
Miss Clark took up her post as UNDP Administrator in April 2009 and this is her first official visit to Tanzania.
