The tranquility of a small village is broken. The peace of a family’s safe rest is forever shattered. The life of a vulnerable teenage girl named Chantal Ngendakumana is about to be violently invaded and destroyed. A few days ago, shortly after midnight on Sunday May 6th a crime of unspeakble horror occurred in the East African nation of Burundi.
Under the cover of darkness a group of sinister criminals armed with guns, machetes and spears invaded the home of 45 year old Albert Ndarahuveye and his wife Leokardy Shiliimana. Albert however, was at his night watchmen job in town. The men rapidly and violently gagged Leokardy and the four children that were in the
home with her. They continued the rampage by binding their hands and legs so that they would be unable to escape or alert others to the grizzly crime that was about to unfold. The gang of organized criminals began a careful search of the home.
They were however, as yet, unable to locate the commodity they came for.
These men were there to cash in on a continuing industry in the trade in albino body parts in Africa. The prized commodity they were seeking to aquire were the arms, legs, hair and blood – of a child with albinism (‘an albino”). These body parts are highly valued assets on the black market. Thousands of US Dollars could be theirs if they obtained these “items”. This is because witchdoctors spin the tale that these body parts, when used the correct way, bring power, wealth and success to their user.
Undeterred, they continued on their premeditated campaign of horror. They were seeking another member of the family - Chantal, the only child with albinism. Unable to locate her they untied her mother’s Leokardy’s) legs and forced her to lead them to the house where her daughter was spending the night with her cousins, 500 meters from their homestead. With lethal weapons in hand the gang of murderers then attemped to force the terrified mother to approach the place where her daughter was sleeping, and pretend as if there was a sick person in her house and that she needed their assistance. When she flatly refused they threatened to murder each of her children one by one as she would watch. As this horror was unfolding, a male relative opened the door, at which point the heavily armed group of men attacked and subdued him, sternly warning that if any of his family members made the slightest noise they would be immediately killed. They gagged everyone, quickly abducted 18 year old Chantal and ran away with her. They had procurrred the commodity they were seeking. “Mission Accomplished” – but no!
They now had to begin the work of preparing the “product” for delivery to their client. Each leg was
hacked off one at a time. We can only imagine the blood curdling screams that bellowed from
Chantal’s lungs as she was violated. The butchery however continued. Each of her arms was now
grasped, as machetes bore down on her. Blood gushing – each arm was chopped off just below her
shoulders. They did their girizzly work very much like a common butcher would prepare meat for sale
in the local market. The parts of Chantal’s body that have cash value were gathered in to a bag. The
rest of her was casually discarded like common trash as they fled with their “prize”. The badly
mutiliated remains of Chantal’s body were found in Bunjumbura Rural, Kabezi Ward only two
kilometers away from the place she, hours ago, called home.
It is believed Chantal died at approximately 1:00 AM on Sunday May 6, 2012**. May she rest in peace.
Chantal’s death brings the current total of the murdered persons with albinism in Burundi to 17. In the
last few years, in neighbouring Tanzania, there have been 78 such murders and an additional 23
survivors of attacks. Under The Same Sun has evidence that such murders and attacks are ongoing in
a number of African countries. In addition, evidence supports the operation on a syndicate of cross
border trade in albino body parts throughout the Continent.
Peter Ash, Founder/CEO of Under the Same Sun (an International NGO working in this area), and
himself a Canadian person with albinism passionatly urges, “These repeated crimes against
vulberable children with albinism must stop now! Governments, Law Enforcement, the
International Community and the Judiciary must act quickly before more innocent young people
like Chantal are lost forever to this evil!”
