Tarime, December 11th, 2008:
Over 4,000 intruders invaded Barrick’s North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime District, Mara Region on December 11th 2008.
The occurrence began at around 1830HRS, when an estimated 400 intruders descended into the Nyabirama pit where Barrick employees were preparing to blast high grade ore, while another 3,000 intruders observed from the top of the pit.
The intruders started stoning the security personnel, under relentless attack and outnumbered the security personnel were forced to abandon their posts and retreat to safety. At this point the rest of the intruders were seen entering the Nyabirama pit and started destroying mining equipment.
At about 2200hrs two Field Force Unit vehicles arrived in the pit and successfully cleared the pit and the surrounding areas, enabling Barrick’s emergency response teams to fight the fires and attempt to rescue equipment.
Among the equipment destroyed is a CAT Loader 988, an RH 170 shovel and RH 120 shovel, and a DI 600 drill were severely damaged.
The estimated equipment damage stands at USD$15 million. In addition there will be significant loss of production and revenue as a result of the invasion.
A meticulous examination of the damage and security of the area are underway. We are working closely with authorities to determine the next steps.
