Cecafa Press Statement
The Cecafa under-17 Challenge Cup (Hassan el Bashir Cup) kicks off in Sudan on August 19th with 12 countries in participation. They include guest sides Nigeria and Egypt who will be using the event as part of their preparations for the Under 17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria in November.
We are therefore, confident that their presence will help spice up our competition.
The draws for the tournament that ends on August 31 were held in Nairobi this morning and are as follows.
Group A (Khartoum) Group B (Juba) Group C (Wadmadeni)
Sudan (hosts) Uganda Burundi (champions)
Nigeria Kenya Egypt
Tanzania Ethiopia Rwanda
Somalia Zanzibar Eritrea
The fixtures will be announced next week after confirming the kick off times.
Facilities at the three venues were inspected last week and found to be up to date in terms of standards.
The first opening ceremony will be held in Khartoum on August 19th while another one will be in Juba on August 20th where we expect First vice President Silva Kiir to attend.
We have received all confirms and in this regard we can confirm that we are on top of things to organize a good competition.
All teams and officials are expected to be in Khartoum by August 17th to facilitate the Medical and Cooper Tests for the 21 referees and assistant referees picked for this competition. The tests are set for August 18th.
Cecafa, Sudan Football Association and the Sudanese Government will cover all the expenses including air fares, accommodation and local transport for all delegations and officials during the competition. This is to the tune of US$700,000.
The centre referees are: Hassan Ali Mohamed (Djibouti), Luleseged Ghebremichael (Eritrea), Thomas Onyango (Kenya), Issa Kagabo (Rwanda), Mohamed Hussein, El Nigomi Ahmed, Rassas Librato (all Sudan), Israel Mujuni (Tanzania) and Dennis Batte (Uganda).
The assistant referees are: Hakizimana Jean Marie (Burundi), Muhamed Hugush (Eritrea), Tilahun Fekadu, Muhamed Sultan (all Ethiopia), Elias Wamalwa (Kenya), Olad arab Bashir (Somalia), Medany Mustafa, Saeed Salih, Khalafala Abdel Aziz, Ahmed Ali Waleed (all Sudan), Erasmo Jesse (Tanzania) and Josephat Bulali (Zanzibar).
