On 22nd Oct
2015 The United Republic of Tanzania deposited the instrument of accession to
Dr. Francis Gurry, Secretary General of International Union for Protection of
New Varieties of Plant (UPOV) and become 74th Member! Ambassador Modest J. Mero. The Permanent Representative of Tanzania to UN in Geneva deposited the
instruments. Also present was the Registrar of Plant Breeders' Rights, Ministry
of Agriculture Food Security and Cooperatives, Tanzania Mr. Patrick Ngwediagi
and Counsellor Elia Mtweve. It historic after all years of hard work!
The United Republic of Tanzania deposited its
instrument of accession to the UPOV Convention on October 22, 2015, and will become the
seventy-fourth member of the International Union for the Protection of New
Varieties of Plants (UPOV) on November 22, 2015.
The purpose of UPOV is to provide and promote
an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging
the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society. UPOV is an intergovernmental organization based
in Geneva.
