AMREF Tanzania today announced the date for the Fundraising Gala Dinner which will be on 11th October, 2013 at the Dar Es Salaam Serena Hotel.  The aim of the Gala Dinner is to raise funds for the campaign dubbed “Stand up for African Mothers”.

Speaking at the press conference today, Dr Festus Ilako, AMREF Country Director said “we are playing our part in helping the Country meet its health related millennium development goals (MDGs) targets, by strengthening the national health care system and contributing to the improvement of the current state of maternal health. Tanzania has done well in meeting the other MDG goals but the one that is critical and important for the future of our country is improving the quality of care for maternal health.

Enhancing the skills of our existing nurse midwives and training others is critical and that is the reason we appeal to you.   The funds raised since the launch of the campaign have so far supported the training of 10 nurse midwives from Tanga (Kilindi) and 70 more are expected to be enrolled from Kilindi, Mtwara and Simiyu regions.  The training will be expanded to cover all regions of Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar, if we can mobilise adequate resources”.
Contributions to support this initiative will be received using the following channels:

  • Mpesa number +255 752 167286 or,
  • Deposit your contribution in our National Bank of Commerce (NBC), Corporate Branch, account number 0111030004548
  • Purchase a table of 10 at USD 1,500 at the fundraising event
“The expected guest of honour will be His Excellency Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete the President of the United Republic of Tanzania. The event is expected to bring together senior government officials, development partners, Corporates, interested public and the media. All proceeds from this event will go towards supporting the aforementioned objective”, he added.

AMREF has been active for the last 57 years striving to create a healthy generation.  Last year in May 15th 2012, we launched the Stand Up for African Mothers campaign and rallied all to join hands to improve the quality of maternal and child health care services .  To achieve this, we need to upgrade the skills of 2,800 existing health workers using eLearning and an additional 1,000 nurse midwives through pre-service training by 2015.

This will contribute to the country’s efforts to achieve MDG5 by increasing the number of skilled birth attendants.  We are appealing to all Tanzanians, to join in the various fundraising activities that will kick off starting with the major one that will be held on 11th October at the Serena Hotel.
